Getting an entire construction site off paper
iControl started because its founder sat through hundreds of construction inspections and watched inspectors lose hours of their day to paperwork afterward, walking a site with a clipboard, then going back to a desk to turn handwritten reports.
The company's whole mission was to close that gap, let someone document a site once, on their phone or tablet, and never touch a paper form again.
THE PROBLEM
"I've written reports for half my life"
Across this industry inspectors puts 100s of hours writing reports, and in a year, the hours compound in the billions, multiply every inspector by every site, every company doing this the same way, it adds up fast.
That's the exact problem iControl was chasing to solve, cutting hours in half of a real person's working life going into a task a phone could do in a fraction of the time.
An inspector walking a site with a paper form has to note every crack, every unfinished fitting, every deficiency by hand, often referencing a printed floor plan to mark where. Then, back at a desk, have to fill up reports on the same thing but more structured. Two passes at the same information.
what we did
Replace paper with iPhones / iPads for these people to report better
The field inspectors:
on site, often in gloves, in direct sun, moving between locations all day. They needed the fastest possible way to log a note or a defect and keep moving.
The subcontractors:
asked to review, comment on, or sign a single report, usually from their phone, usually just once.
The project managers:
not on site as often, but accountable for knowing what was actually happening across one or several projects without chasing people for updates.
Design approach
Keep it simple and straight forward
Redesigning the iOS app:
The app already handled the core loop, an inspector walking a site, taking notes, attaching photos as they went but it had grown the way developer-built tools usually do: a feature added wherever it was needed.

From dashboards, project overviews to document management and reporting, the platform connected field inspections with office teams in one place
THE OUTCOME
The bigger win was that a finished report had somewhere to go. Because the output was a standard, complete document, it dropped into whatever project management system a company already used.

That's a company-level result, not something I'll claim credit for personally, but it's the proof that the thing I was designing toward, actually held up on a real job site, not just in a design file.
